Margaret, known as Maggie, was born on March 11th, 1891 in Ayr.1 2  Maggie's father was William Surgeoner and her mother was Elisabeth Bone.  Her maternal grandparents were David Bone and Susan Hammond. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, James, Susan and Bessie.  She was the youngest of the five children.
