Helen's father was Thomas Shepherd and her mother was Helen Donaldson.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Shepherd and Barbra Scot; her maternal grandparents were William Donaldson and Issobell Givan. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, William, Isobel, Helen and Margaret.  She was the youngest of the six children.
