Jonathan's father was John Pitt and his mother was Helen McMurren.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Pitt and Lillias Drennan; his maternal grandparents were Jonathon McMurren and Susan McAllan. He had a brother and four sisters, named Samuel, Jane, Helen, Elizabeth and Lily.  He was the third oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 24 in 1867 in Sorn.
