Sarah's father was Peter Rennie McIntyre and her mother was Sarah McDonald Dunlop. Her paternal grandparents were John McIntyre and Maryann Rennie. She had two sisters named Janet and Elizabeth. She was the youngest of the three children. She died at the age of 82 in 1986 in Falkirk.
