Catherine's father was Donald McQueen and her mother was Mary McDonald. Her paternal grandparents were John MacQueen and Ann Mcintyre. She had two brothers and six sisters, named Peter, John, Mary, Margaret, Ann, Christina, Elizabeth and Mary. She was the second youngest of the nine children.
