John's father was George McGeoch and his mother was Janet Drummond. His maternal grandparents were William Drummond and Christian Campbell. He had five brothers and three sisters, named George, William, David, Alexander, James, Christina, Agnes and Janet. He was the fifth oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 1 in 1858 in Glasgow.
