Isabella's father was Charles MacGowan and her mother was Margaret (Maggie) Howie Galt. Her maternal grandparents were Robert Galt and Isabella Drummond. She had a brother and a sister, named Charles and Jessie. She was the oldest of the three children. She died at the age of 44 in 1942 in Glasgow.
