Robert's father was John Kerr and his mother was Mary Walker. His maternal grandparents were John Walker and Isabella Neil. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, William, John, Elizabeth, Isabella and Mary. He was the third oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 35 in 1892 in East Lothian.
