Agnes' father was John Johnston and her mother was Julian Gillis.  Her maternal grandparents were Alexander Gillis and Elisabeth Auld. She had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Alexander, Peter, Elisabeth, Margaret and Julian.  She was the second youngest of the seven children.
