Niels was born in 1776.  Niels' father was Jens Nielsen Mæhlsen and his mother was Karen Nielsdatter.  His paternal grandparents were Niels Jensen and Maren Pedersdatter; his maternal grandparents were Niels Christensen and Else Pedersdatter. He had a brother and two sisters, named Niels, Maren and Karen.  He was the second oldest of the four children.
