Catherine's father was John Hamilton and her mother was Annie Brown. Her paternal grandparents were Alexander Hamilton and Sara Fraser. She had five brothers and a sister, named John, Alexander, William, Hugh, Robert and Sarah. She was the second oldest of the seven children. She died at the age of 28 in 1895 in Dalmellington.
