Bessie's father was John Hadston and her mother was Isobel Pringle.  Her paternal grandparents were John Hadstone and Bessie Beanie; her maternal grandparents were Robert Pringle and Marjory Brand. She had a brother and five sisters, named James, Christiane, Isobel, Elspet, Helen and Margaret.  She was the second youngest of the seven children.
