Helen's father was Robert Greig and her mother was Margaret Thomson.  Her maternal grandparents were James Thomson and Jean Duncan. She had three brothers and two sisters, named John, Robert, James, Jane and Davidina.  She was the second youngest of the six children.  She died at the age of 71 in 1922 in Edinburgh.
