Sophia's father was Ramsay Gibson and her mother was Sophia Dugan. Her paternal grandparents were John Gibson and Eliza Jane Wray. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Ramsay, Samuel, Robert, Annie, Mary and Ethel. She was the third oldest of the seven children. She had a half-brother named John.
