Rachel's father was Samuel Gibson and her mother was Alice Brown McVicker. Her paternal grandparents were Ramsay Gibson and Sophia Dugan. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Frederick, Samuel, John, Ramsay, Sophia and Eileen. She was the youngest of the seven children.
