David's father was James Finnie and his mother was Isabell Dick.  His maternal grandparents were David Dick and Janet Grant. He had a brother and two sisters, named James, Agnes and Isabella.  He was the second youngest of the four children.  He died at the age of 70 in 1904 in Edinburgh.³
