Jean's father was Alexander Cuningham and her mother was Margaret Brash.  Her maternal grandparents were John Brash and Jean Richie. She had a brother and three sisters, named Alexander, Helen, Margaret and Isabel.  She was the oldest of the five children.  She died at the age of 76 on May 25th, 1862 in Uphall.²
