Brother's father was Charles Brotherston and his mother was Susan Borthwick.  His maternal grandparents were Hugh Borthwick and Margaret Brash. He had eight brothers and a sister, named brother, brother, brother, brother, brother, brother, brother, brother and brother.  He was the youngest of the ten children.
