James' father was Ramsay Borthwick and his mother was Jean Whitelaw.  His paternal grandparents were Hugh Borthwick and Margaret Brash. He had two brothers and a sister, named Hugh, Thomas and Margaret.  He was the second oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 56 on September 25th, 1885 in Kirkliston.  He was buried in Kirkliston.
