Helen's father was Henry Arbuckle and her mother was Margaret Nairn. Her paternal grandparents were John Arbuckle and Elizabeth Hailstones. She had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Robert, Harry, William, Agnes and Margaret. She was the second youngest of the seven children. She died at the age of 87 in 2006 in Ayr.
