John Piatt was born on September 21st, 1824 in Cairo, Ritchie, WV.  John Piatt's father was Joseph Marshall and his mother was Hannah McKinney.  His paternal grandparents were William Marshall and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were William McKinney and Frances Piatt. He had six brothers and a sister, named William McKinney, Frances James, Robert Ruth, Jacob W, Hezekiah Bukey, David H and Eleanor.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
