Newton was born in 1828.  Newton's father was Caleb Johnston and his mother was Nancy Feagin.  His paternal grandparents were William Johnston and widow Ballard; his maternal grandparents were Aaron Feagin and Pheribee Wadsworth. He had a sister named Rebecca B.  He was the younger of the two children.
