John R was born in 1831.  John R's father was Nancy Castleman and his mother was William C Brown.  His paternal grandparents were John Henry Castleman and Frances Gatewood. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Augustine, Lewis, William, Mary and Frances.  He was the oldest of the six children.
