Thanks to everyone who has been sending information on the Loves ofChester/York Counties in SC. My paper is almost finished and shouldbe available later this week. I have come to a tentative conclusionthat the father of all these Loves was quite likely Robert Love whocame from Ireland and died in Lancaster Co PA in 1741.
I would appreciate any information anyone may have on Robert Love. Here is
some of what I have:
- Robert came to PA sometime after about 1717
- probably lived in Chester Co PA
- later moved to Lancaster Co where he died in 1741
- purchased 300 acres of land (NEEDMORE ON THIS)
- West Fallowfield Twp., Chester Co is mentioned
- Faggs Manor Parish in Chester Co is mentioned.
If anyone has additional details on any of this, please send it to me.

For Adam Drexler: I saw your post a couple of days back aboutEnglish Bill. Since the list has had several very lively iscussionsabout him and his progeny, I thought you would get 197 responses. Ihaven't seen any!
Anyway, I have been looking at him at a possible father for my JohnLove who died in 1799 in Chester County. John and his children werevery involved with Sadlers and allied families.
>From Some Heroes of the American Revolution by Rev. J. D. Bailey,1924, Band & White Printers, Spartanburg.
Pp 144/145, part of an article on Colonel Thomas Brandon:
For want of current funds, provisions were difficult to obtain, sotheir fare often consisted of barley meal, without meat, salt or anyother seasoning, and but little of that. All the powder which couldbe had was collected. The good women in the region around gave uptheir pewter vessels to be molded into bullets and implements ofhusbandry were battered into
swords. While thus engaged, the Patriots had to maintain the mostvigilant care, for the Tories were watching every movement, and oftenwaylaid and fired on them. An instance of this kind came to a smallparty led by Colonel Brandon nea r Bullock's Creek. A captain, by thename of Reed, fell behind the party for some reason and was met andkilled by two Tories. Captain Reed's mother, finding out who hismurderers were, followed Brandon to North Carolina and besought him toavenge the death of her son. Some of his men volunteered to go withhim and he hunted the Tories and killed them.
The friends of the murdered Tories, in return, sought vengeance, andpursued Brandon in considerable force. He retired before them untilhe could obtain recruits, when he turned to meet his pursuers. Ashort time before he met their party a Colonel Love(*)fell in withhim. Love had encountered the Tories single-handed only a short timebefore and killed two of them. He made his escape by dodging in abriary old field. Brandon soon learned that the Tories had stopped atthe house of a man named Stallions in York District to get dinner.Stallions had married the sister of Colonel Love; hence he was a Toryand she was a Whig. Brandon divided his force into two parties, heleading one and Love the other. The house was surrounded. Mrs.Stallions, seeing the approach of her brother, ran out and begged himnot to fire upon the house. Running back to the house, just as shesprang upon the doorstep, she fell, pierced by a ball shot through theopposite door. The Tories, being attacked on all sides, kept up forsome a fire upon their assailants. It was not long, however, beforethey raised a flag and surrendered. The Tory loss was two killed, four wounded and twenty-eight prisoners. William Kennedy, anAmerican, was wounded. The prisoners were sent to Charlotte. Thevictory was gained at a bitter loss to Colonel Love who mingled histears with those of his Tory brother-in-law. This affair took placeJuly 12, 1780.
(*) This was Andrew Love, son of Alexander.
Pp 210/211, from the article on Colonel Joseph Hughes:
William Hughes resided on the west side of Broad River, probablybelow Lockhart Shoals, and his brother, Thomas, a short distance lowerdown. Learning that the "Guerillas" were on the other side of theriver, the Tories seized the opportunity to burn the houses of thesetwo men. They burned the house of Thomas Hughes about ten o'clock atnight. Mrs. Hughes was in bed with a two weeks old infant. She wasdriven from the house with the other children and compelled to takerefuge in a Negro cabin. The bed on which she lay was ripped open andfeathers strewn over the yard. They
took what provisions they wanted and destroyed the balance thenproceeded up the river with the intention of burning William Hughes'house, but stopped on the way to cook some of their stolen rations andrest until just before daylight, when they expected to continue withtheir fiendish destruction.
Learning that the Tories were in the vicinity on a rampage, Mrs.William Hughes went in great haste to notify her kindred and friendson the other side of the river. Leaving her children in the care of afaithful servant called "Old Hector," she went to the river and rowedacross, about twelve o'clock at night, apprised the soldiers of theTory movement and returned in safety to her home. With the assistanceof the negroes and children who were large enough to help, she went towork burying and hiding clothing, dishes and everything the Torieswould be apt to carry off.
In the meantime, the men aroused on the other side of the rivergot busy. Grasping their arms, they mounted their horses and hastenedafter the marauders, whom they soon came up with in their temporarycamp, and opened fire - completely surprising them. Some werefeasting on the stolen provisions, some were asleep, while others wereplaying cards and exulting over the destruction they had wrought. There were fifty men in the Tory party, but so complete was theirsurprise, they left everything and fled in every direction. Some hadthe presence of mind to mount their horses, while others were leftstanding. Some few were killed. One Tory, by the name of Love(**),was so closely pursued that he plunged into the river and attempted toford the stream. While thus making his way one of the Hughes mentook aim and fired, killing him instantly. From that time until nowthat part of Broad River has been know as Love's Ford. Thus by theheroism of a brave woman the house of William Hughes was saved and aTory party broken up.
(**)James - Son of "English Bill."
Pp 251, 252, 253, from the article on Major Thomas Young:
Hearing there was a body of Tories assembled at the house of aLoyalist named Stallions (probably Stallings), in York District,Colonel Brandon took a detachment of about fifty Whigs to attack them. The youthful Thomas Young was one of the number for he says, "Beforewe arrived at the house in which they were fortified we were dividedinto two parties. Captain Love - with a party of sixteen, of which Iwas one - marched to attack the front, while Colonel Brandon, with theremainder, made a circuit to intercept those who should attempt toescape and also to attack the rear. Mrs. Stallions was a sister ofCaptain Love and on the approach of her brother, she ran out andbegged him not to fire upon the house. He told her it was too latenow and that their only chance for safety was to surrender. She ranback to the house and sprang upon the doorstep, which was pretty high.At this moment the house was attacked in the rear by Colonel Brandon'sparty, and Mrs. Stallions was killed by a ball shot through theopposite door."
The Tory loss was two killed, four wounded and twenty-eightprisoners. The prisoners were sent to Charlotte, N. C. After thefight Love and Stallions met and shed bitter tears over the body ofthe wife and sister. Stallions was dismissed on parole so he mightbury his wife and arrange his affairs. Brandon and his party thenretreated to North Carolina.
Soon after the affair at Stallions a most pathetic incidentoccurred, which Major Young relates as follows: "One Captain Reid wasa neighbor's house in York District, on a visit. The landlady saw twomen approaching the house whom she knew to be Tories, and told CaptainReid he had better escape, for they would kill him. He replied, No;they had been his neighbors; he had known Love and Saddler all hislife, and had nothing to fear from them. He walked out into the yard, offered them his hand and they killed him. His mother, a very oldwoman, came to where we were encamped in North Carolina. One morningwe were called out on parade and this old woman came before us,leaning on the arms of two officers. She drew from her bosom thebloody pocketbook of her son, and three times attempted to go to herknees, but was
prevented by the officers who supported her."
"Colonel Brandon stepped out and asked if there were any willingto volunteer to avenge her wrongs. Twenty-five stepped out at once. Iwas one of the number. We started, rode all night, halted in the day, kept watch in the woods but slept not; the next night we arrived atold Love's. One part of our company was to attack the house, theother the barn. The house was attacked, and the door broken down by apowerful man named Maddox, who was afterwards killed at King'sMountain. In staving open the door, he floored old Love (***) andknocked some of his teeth out. At this moment a cry was raised thatthey were in the barn, and to the barn we all rushed. One our our menfired through the door and killed one of the murderers; the other waskilled in the skirmish (****). What is most strange about the matteris that another man (*****) was sleeping with them, and in the meleehe escaped unhurt."
Their guns were taken, and those of all the other Tories theyfound on their return. Says Young: "By the time we got back every manof us had two guns apiece. We now felt we had done all that wasrequired of us." The dastardly and cowardly murder of Captain Reidwas thus avenged.
(***) English Bill.
(****) one of the sons of English Bill and the son-in-law, Sadler.
(*****) this was doubtless English Bill's son, Thomas, who fled toMississippi and lived among the Chickasaw.
Hope there is something here that is helpful. Mickey
