          The following information was obtained from the CLEMENT PAPERS which is composed of Colonial New Jersey families. This was on LDS Film No. 501014,page 148. -- copied at Wichita, Kansas by Harvey Zane, March 31, 1974.
          The following letter was written to ISAAC ZANE 9th day of 2nd month 1815 and was signed by WILLIAM ZANE. It is assumed that the ISAAC ZANE is the one who married PRINCESS MYEERAH of the Wyandot Indians....Harvey Zane
          Mount Pleasant, 9th day of 2nd mo 1815
          Respected friend; And as I am informed a worthy relation recently came to my hand a short account of thy being taken captive by the Indians. Thy adoption and marriage--thy age, they wifes name and age, the names and ages of thy children which account was dated 23rd of 2nd mo 1798. Which communication was made to NATHAN ZANE of Haddenfield which states the number of thy children to be 7 at that time.
          A favorable opportunity precenting I think proper to communicate to thee a short history of the relation in the State of New Jersey. My grandfathers name was ROBERT ZANE and my grandmothers name was Jane Satterwaite. Their children were ROBERT (which was my father) JOSEPH, WILLIAM SIMEON, ISAAC, REBECCA, RACHEL, ELIZABETH and ESTHER who all married and had issue. The old stock are all deceased except my AUNT ASUBA which is ISAACS widow. My grandfather departed this life about 1774 being as I am informed ninety odd years of age and my grandmother survived him about four years and I believe was in her 84 years when she died. They acquired a large Estate and were of good character. As I before mentioned my father's name was ROBERT and my mother name was MARY. They had issue--seven sons. Father died about 46 years past if I mistake not in the 55 year of his age. My mother married a second husband--Solomon Lippincott who deceased and left my mother a widow, who lived several years after if I am not mistaken was in her 85 year when she departed this life. My brothers names viz 1. NATHAN 2. ISAAC 3. ROBERT 4.myself (WILLIAM) 5. JOSEPH 6. SIMEON 7. CHATTEN (after my mothers maiden name). All married and had issue and are living except NATHAN and do reside in the county of Gloucester, State of New Jersey. As to myself the records of my age say I was born on 16 day of 2nd month 1752. I was put on apprentice at or about 15 and learned the trade of a carpenter. Between 22 and 23 I married a worthy girl whose name was Elizabeth Hillman with the consent of her parents and the supporbation of friends by whom I had issue as follows --JAMES- SAMUEL- MARY- SARAH- ELIZABETH -WILLIAM- ANN- KESIAH- MARTHA- and PARMILLA. 1) JAMES married Mary Ellis; their issue SIMEON, SARAH, WILLIAM, MARY. 2) SAMUEL married Mary Marple: their issue was ISAIAH, JOSEPH, ROBERT, WILLIAM, ELIZABETH, MARIA, JANE, GEORGE, SAMUEL and JAMES. 3. WILLIAM married Elizabeth Camborn (and Hannah Griffith) their issue was MARY ANN, ELIZABETH, and HELSIN. My daughter MARY died unmarried, ELIZABETH, SARAH, and PARMILLA all died in their minority. KESIAH and MARTHA were twins --each married-- each died in childbirth-- each left a female infant who were named after their respective mother.
    
          ANN married Amos Cox and had issue --WILLIAM ZANE COX, ELIZABETH, and RICHARD, JAMES, SAMUEL and ANN resides in Waterford township in the county and state aforesaid. WILLIAM resides in Philadelphia and has several times been with his team to Pittsburg.
          Among such other matters not material or touching this genealogy of this family--he says his wife died on the 2nd of the 6th month last.

          I, WILLIAM ZANE of the township and county of Gloucester being of sound mind and memory do make and publish this my last will and testament thereby making void all wills heretofore made by me, in manner following: That is to say: Item the first, I give and bequeath to my dear and beloved wife, HANNAH ZANE all the property whatsoever description it may be that she brot to me at our marriage and the remainder of my personal estate be sold as soon after my decease as conveniently made by my executors hereafter named and the money thence arising be first applyed to the payment of my funeral charges and just debts and specified-----and the residue thereof my will is that my dear wife HANNAH in addition to what is shone bequeathed to her, hereby bequeathed to her one third of the net proceeds of my moveable estate not otherwise appropriated and I wish to be understood that it is my will that all my estate bequeathed to my beloved wife except the money as maybe due to her from the sale of my personal estate on the final settlement of all the Estate by my executors delivered to her as ordered within twenty days after my decd upon her claiming of the same ( without inventory of appraisement) and further it is my will that the remainder two thirds of my personal estate I desire as follows (W.Z.)
    
          To my sons JAMES ZANE, SAMUEL ZANE, WILLIAM ZANE and the children of my daughter ANN COXE (deceased) and my granddaughter KEZIAH LIPPINCOTT and my granddaughter MARTHA GARWOOD to be distributed amonst them by executors, shear and shear alike, one year after my deseas, except my two granddaughters KIZIAH and MARTHA my will is that my executors retain in their hands the shears that they are lawfully entitled to until they shall legally arrive at the age of 18 years and if either of them should die under the age of eighteen years the survivor of them shall receive both shears and I wish to be understood that the grandchildren the heirs of ANN COXE my daughter are entitled to one chiles shear and further I bequeath to my son JAMES ZANE my waring apparel and to my son, SAMUEL ZANE, sixteen dollars one year after my desease and that my executors deliver to my son WILLIAM ZANE my silver watch immediately after my desease. Item - I give and bequeath to my grand daughter ELIZABETH COXE my silver spoons marked E. Z. at any time at the disgression of my executors and lastly I nominate and appoint my beloved wife HANNAH ZANE and my trusty son, JAMES ZANE executors of this testament and last will. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this twenty first day of the seventh month, one thousand eight hundred and twenty two (1822).

          second: 23 Sept 1675 arrived on "Griffin" with Fenwick's Colony in Elsinburra, then up to Salem, NJ
          third: 22 12th mo 1677 aboard the "Mary of Dublin" arrived Elsinburgh, NJ from Dublin.

"and upon the nineteenth day of September, in the year of Out Lord 1681, we sett saile from the place aforesaid, and through the good providence of God towards us, we arrived at Elsinburg, in the County of Salem, upon the 19th day of November following. Where we were well entertained at the houses of the Thompsons, who came from Ireland about four years before.....and after some considerable search to and fro in that then was called the Third of Irish Tenth, we at last pitehed upon the place now called Newton, which was before the settlement of Philadelphia; and then applied to sd Surveyor, who came and laid it out for us; and the next spring, being the beginning of the year 1682, we all removed from Salem together, with ROBERT ZANE, that had been setteld there, who came along from Ireland with the THOMPSONS before hinted, and having expectation of our coming only bought a lott in Salem Town, upon the which he seated himself until out coming, whose propriatery right and ours being of the same nature, could not then take it up in FENWICK'S TENTH, and so we began our settlement...."

          POMFRET, JOHN E., THE PROVINCE OF WEST NEW JERSEY 1609-1702: PAGE 123: ".....the persecution was, in a large number of cases, the primaty reason for leaving. The Irish Proprietors were well known to one another and made plans to undertake a separate settlement. As early as September 1677 an agreement was made by ANTHONT SHARP, WILLIAM CLARK, MATHIAS FOSTER, ROGER ROBERTS, RICHARD HUNTER, THOMAS ATHERTON, AND THOMAS STARKEY whereby one of their number would journey to West Jersey and develop their propriety. This group soon joined with ROBERT TURNER, JOSEPH SLEIGH, ROBERT ZANE, THOMAS THACKARY, AND WILLIAM BATE, owners of another share, in delegatine THACKARY, BATE, THOMAS SHARP, GEORGE GOLDSMITH, and MARK NEWBIE to establish a colony. ZANE preceded the expedition in order to scout out the land. He arrived late in 1677 and, while in residence in Salem, he was in constant correspnndence with ROBERT TURNER who is given the major credit for organizing and financing the undertaking.
          "The first Irish settlers arrived at Salem in the OWNER'S ADVENTURE, in November 1681. They spent the winter there and in the spring removed to Newton Creek 'as you most invitingst place to settle by'. They then obtained warrants of survey from the commissioners who directed Daniel Leeds, Surveyor of the Province, to lay out their lands in the Third Tenth. The Third Tenth, popularly known as the Irish Tenth, was situated between Pennsauken and Timber Creeks....."

          THE PENNSYLVANIA MAGAZINE OF HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY, VOL XII, 1888: page 123: "ROBERT ZANE came from Ireland to America in the year (date torn off) landed at Elsinburra near Salem in West Jersey and stayd there about 4 years, in which time he tuck a canew and went in sarch of a settlement & padled along the side of the river and up the creeks till at last he chose a place up Newton Creek in Gloster County, which place is cald Newton. Here he settled having only one child whose name was Nathaniel and was about 2 years old when they landed."

          The record of venturesome ROBERT ZANE and His Indian bride. ROBERT ZANE was of English Parentage, possibly mixed with Danish, from his native Yorkshire, he traveled to Ireland where he married his first wife MARGARET HAMMOND at Dublin, the wife did not long survive after the birth of a son NATHANIEL in 1670. A Sergemeker by trade and a Quaker by profession. ZANE was in contact when EDWARD BYLLINGE, WILLIAM PENN, and JOHN FENWICK were looking toward the founding of a Quaker Colony in New Jersey.
          "As part of the advance guard---probably as the entire guard, he sailed to New York in 1673-4 and crossed New Jersey to the Delaware, perhaps his looms and his son were with him, more likely they followed later. No record exists of reports to his principals, but it is noted that Fenwick's colonizing party in the fall of 1675 struck immediately on a site for a settlement at Salem, N.J. ROBERT ZANE built a house there at the junction of early York and Fenwick roads. He was on hand when the proprietary passengers of 1677 founded that town.

          Marriage Notes for Robert Zane and Alis Alday (2):
          Some claim that Alis Alday was an Indian woman, and others say she was white and a niece of Samuel Oledale, who signed on the marriage certificate. There is no mention of her ethnicity in Quaker Records. I have not entered into this debate, as I feel it is a moot point as there were no children of this marriage. In ANN WHITALL, HEROINE OF RED BANK, page 22, UNJ.6189 states: "Robert Zane married Alice Alday, an Indian. in Burlington 1679 in Friends Meeting House. The ceremony was witnessed by Friends and Indians. There was no record of any children born to him by his Indian Bride not how long she lived after her marriage."

          WILL OF NATHANIEL ZANE NO 109H - 1727
          The twentyth day of the twelveth month anno dommy one thousand seven hundred twenty seven, I NATHANIEL ZANE of Newton in the county of Gloucester and in the western division of the province of New Jersey Yeoman, being weak of body but of sound memory praised be God do make and constitute this my last will and testament in writing manner and form following do hereby revoking and making null and void all former and other will and wills, testament or testaments by me heretofore made and do declare this to be my last will and testament.
          Imprimis: I give and bequeath to my son JOSEPH his heirs and assigns forever my dwelling house wherein I now live and all my housing _______ and _______ and all the lands to me belonging excepting one third for my wife during her life and after her decease to my said son: JOSEPH and his heirs and assigns forever my said son acquitting the payment of ten pounds which I owed him to be disposed of as I shall hereafter appoint I also give him my negro Genny after the decease of my wife.
          Item: I give and bequeath to my son, JONATHAN his heirs and assigns forever my clothes with the silver buttons on them immediately after my decease and my negro Cuffoy at the time of his marriage and my clock at the decease of my wife and five schilling sterling within twelve months of my decease.
          Item: I give and bequeath to my son EBENEZER and his heirs and assign forever my negro man Phillip to be delivered at the time of his marriage and five schilling money to be paid him within twelve months after my decease.
          Item: I give and bequeath to my son ISAAC and to his heirs and assigns forever my negro Johmall to be delivered him when he shall arrive at the age of one and twenty years and also ten pound in money to be paid him at the age of one and twenty years.
          Item: I give and bequeath to my son WILLIAM and to his heirs and assigns forever all the remainder of my personal effects excepting my wifes thirds and what is other way disposed of will, my wife third I give to her disposing forever and all the remainder of my goods and chattels not otherwise disposed of as aforesaid to my son William.
          Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter MARGARET and to her heirs and assigns forever my negro Diniah and one of my cows such as one as my wife shall appoint her and five sheep and my _________ _________ all which to be delivered to her immediately or within a few days after my decease. I also give her five schilling to be paid her within twelve months after my decease.
          Item: I give to my daughter ABIGAIL one of my cows such one as shall be appointed out by my wife to be delivered to her immediately after my decease and fiver schilling sterling to be paid within twelve months after.
          Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter HANNAH and to her heirs and assigns forever my negro _______ one of my pair of chest of drawers and _____ bed all which is to be appointed her by my wife to be delivered to her immediately or within a few days after my decease. I also give her five schilling sterling to be paid to her within twelve months after and one of my cows to be appointed by my wife.
          Item: I nominate appoint constitute and make my son JOSEPH and my son JONATHAN executors of this my last will. In testimony whereof I the said NATHANIEL ZANE have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal the day and year first written.
