William was born about 1748 in Elizabethtown, New Jersey.  William's father was Matthias Williamson and his mother was Susannah Halsted.  His paternal grandparents were William Williamson and Margaret  De Harte Hart; his maternal grandparents were John T Halsted and Susannah Blanchard. He had two brothers named Matthias and Isaac Halstead 8th Governor of New Jersey.  He was the oldest of the three children.
