Joel was born on March 1st, 1764 in Rockbridge County, Virginia.  Joel's father was Capt Samuel Rutherford Walker and his mother was Jane Patterson.  His paternal grandparents were John McKnight Walker II and Katherine Allen Rutherford. He had a brother and a sister, named James Patterson and Barbara.  He was the youngest of the three children.  He died at the age of 70 in May 1834 in Fayette County, ILL.
