Joseph Van was born about 1682 in St. Mary's City, Maryland.  Joseph Van's father was Garrett  Van Swearingen and his mother was Mary Smith. He had a sister named Eleanor Van.  He was the older of the two children. He had a half-brother named Thomas Van.  He died about 1720.
