John was born in November 1726 in Prince George's County, Maryland.  John's father was William Stroud and his mother is Margaret Rose.  His paternal grandparents are John Stroud (Stroud Strode Strowd) and Hannah; his maternal grandparents are John Rose and <Unknown>. He has four brothers named William, Peter, Thomas and Yearby.  He is the oldest of the five children.
