Richard's father was Capt John of Bretherton, Lancashire immigrant Stone Sr and his mother was Katherine Griffin.  His paternal grandparents were Richard de Croston Stone and Elizabeth Isabelle Girdler. He had four brothers named Royal Governor William 1649 to 1656, John, Sprigg and Andrew.
