Ashwell was born in 1750 in St Philips Parish, Charleston, SC.  Ashwell's father was William Stone and his mother is Sarah Elizabeth.  His paternal grandparents are William Stone and Sarah. He had a brother and two sisters, named William, Mary and Elizabeth.  He died at the age of 31 in 1781 in VA.
