Thomas was born on December 29th, 1747 in Mill Creek Hundred, New Castle, Delaware.  Thomas' father is John Stansfield and his mother is Hannah Hadley. He has two brothers named John and Samuel.  He is the second oldest of the three children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Simon, Rebecca and Ruth.
