John's father was Earl William of Caithness Sinclair and his mother is Margaret Keith.  His paternal grandparents are Earl William of Caithness Sinclair and Marjory Southerland; his maternal grandparents are Sir Gilbert of Inverugie Keith and <Unknown>.  He was an only child.  He died in May 1529.
