  •     Mr. and Mrs. Rogers moved to the Cherokee Nation in 1871. TheFort Gibson Post, July 27, 1905: Mrs. Cherokee A. Rogers, anoted Cherokee woman; a cousin of the Confederate General JohnH. Morgan, who hid at her house after his remarkable escape fromColumbus Prison. She resided with her four sons in a beautifulhome near the Arkansas River, abut three miles from Ft. Gibson,where she has a fine farm and one of the finest dwellings in theCherokee Nation. Mrs. Rogers is intellectual, being one of themost well-read women in these parts. She is of French Hoguenotancestry on her mother's side, and her father was a descendantof General Daniel Morgan, of Revolutionary fame, who was Irish.At the end of the War between the States they were left almostpenniless, like thousands of others in the South. They weretrue and loyal to the Southern Cause, and suffered accordingly.On June 20, 1853, her brother-in-law gave Mrs. Rogers thethree-volume Thomas Scott Family Bible, with many pages devotedto births, marriages, and deaths. She maintained the Morganfamily records until her death.She wrote: Some people do not have a proper conception of theCherokee, farmers and stock raisers, who were by far the mostenlightened race of Indians and frequently intermarried withAmerican pioneers. The Creeks and Osages roved aroundcommitting depredations on the stock and crops of others, andintermarried with negroes, which the Cherokees never did. Forthose reasons, we cooperated with the whites in crushing theCreek Nation in the battle of Horseshow Bend. The regiment ofCherokees was about eight hundred strong. My father was incommand, and his father-in-law, Major John Walker, was second incommand. My father was wounded twice in the battle, oncethrough the shoulder, and a wound across his left temple,eventually blinding him in that eye. My father spent a gooddeal of time in Washington, coming to know Henry Clay, John C.Calhoun, and Daniel Webster. Also, my father had a large numberof letters and papers about the disagreement between Gen. AndrewJackson and Gen. John Coffee. They all were lost during thewar. You know, we were Confederates.
