John was born about 1750 in Amelia Co. VA.  John's father was James Ritchie Sr and his mother is Margaret Caldwell.  His paternal grandparents were Alexander Ritchie and Jeanne Caldwell; his maternal grandparents are Maj. William Caldwell and Margaret Park. He had four brothers and two sisters, named James, Robert J, Andrew, William A, Anne and Agnes.  He was the oldest of the seven children.  He died in November 1808 in Abbeville Co., SC.
