John was born in 1690 in Donegal Co., Ireland.  John's father was William Rankin and his mother is Dorothy Black.  His paternal grandparents are Alexander Rankin and Maria unk. He had two brothers named Adam and Hugh.  He died at the age of 59 in 1749 in PA.
