Silas Hinton was born on September 20th, 1798.  Silas Hinton's father was David (Rolstone) Ralston Jr and his mother was Sarah Hinton.  His paternal grandparents were David Ralston Sr and Ann Copeland; his maternal grandparents were John Hinton and Esther Evans. He had three brothers and a sister, named Jesse, Jacob M, Benjamin Fielding and Anne.  He was the fourth oldest of the five children.
