    Col. Joseph Crisman Porter C.S.A. was one of the leading officers in the Missouri
    campaigns of the civil war. He fought under Generals Marmaduke and Sterling Price. He was mortally wounded with a mini ball in his thigh at the battle of
    Hartsville, Missouri in January 16, 1863. He withdrew his troops to Batesville, Arkansas only to die from his wounds about a month later. He was buried in a shallow grave in the Edwin R. Mcguire family cemetery just across the White River from Batesville. The site now has houses built on top of it.
    
    He was designated in 1852 by his mother in law Sara Whitelaw Marshall upon her husband Willis' death to be the administrator of his estate in the absence of
    her two oldest sons William Alexander and James Forsyth Marshall who were in California at the 1849 "Gold Rush"
    
    He attended Marion Masonic College in Philidelphia, Missouri.
    
    Pvt. James W. Porter who is believed to be Col. Joe Porter son was discharged
    from the 6th Missouri Cavalry on 27 March 1862 in Batesville, Arkansas
