Alfred Cowan was born on May 18th, 1827 in Fayette County, Alabama.  Alfred Cowan's father was Andrew  McKillip McCaleb and his mother was Elizabeth Lowrey.  His paternal grandparents were Hugh  McKillup McCaleb and Agnes Hannah; his maternal grandparents were William Lowrey and Isabelle White? Taylor?. He had a brother and a sister, named Hugh White and Elizabeth.  He died at the age of 63 on January 14th, 1891 in Fayette County, Alabama.
