Virginia Catherine was born on January 24th, 1853.  Virginia Catherine's father was William Anderson Marshall and her mother was Delilah Ann Erskine.  Her paternal grandparents were William H Marshall and Nancy Jones. She had four brothers and four sisters, named William Hamilton, Andrew Jackson, Joseph Letcher, Hunter Floyd, Martha Susan, Margaret Ann, Lydia Ellen and Rosie Angeline.  She was the third oldest of the nine children.
