    There is
    an account of Stephen Marshall, the Presbyterian minister,
    in Neal's History of the Puritans. Sir Peter Leycester, who married a
    daughter of Lord Gerard, of Bromley, observes in his History of
    Cheshire, that "the two famous women-actors in London" were
    daughter of John Button, of Dutton. Sir Peter being connected by
    marriage with the Buttons, ought to have known the fact; but it is
    difficult to suppose that Mrs. Pierce and Nell Gwyn could have been
    ignorant of the actress's real history. Nor does it seem likely that
    Lord Gerard, who was a staunch Royalist, would have selected a Presbyterian
    minister for his chaplain. If Nell Gwyn's story was untrue,

    "Jessey-Stinton," 12-13  Dr Daniel Featley, loyal Anglican churchman acknowledged that those who subscribed to this confession were not heretics or schismatics, and the rev Stephen marshall (1594-1655), an avid supporter of Puritan preaching, called it "the most orthodox of any Anabaptist Confession that I have ever read" "Stinton Repository" 24 Marshall told the Hose of Commons in 1640 that "preaching is the chariot which salvation comes riding into the mearts of men."     The eminent preacher of his day, whose great abilities and influence
    over the Parliament
    were admitted even by Clarendon. He was a native of Godmanchester. co. Huntingdon, and
    entered Emanuel College, Cambridge, 1 Apl. 1615. He was at various times minister at Finching-
    field, Essex, St. Margaret's, Westminster, and 8t. Mary-at-the-Quay, Ipswich. He died 19 Nov.
    His will, undated, was proved 11 Feb. 1656-6. His remains were removed after the Restoration,
    with those of many others who had rendered themselves obuoxious to the royalists, to a common
    pit in the churchyard. (The scandalous story, first started by Pepys, and occasionally reproduced
    to this day, that two of his daughters, named Anne and Rebecca, were actresses and
    courtesans during the reign of King Charles II., and even that King's own mistresses as late as
    1672, may be safely repudiated as untrue. At the date of his will his wife was dead, and five of
    his daughters were already married, three of them at least to clergymen, and had several children.

    Jos. Bingham (Anglican, d. 1668): Origines Ecclesiasticae; or, The Antiquities of the Christian Church, first published 1710–22, in 10 vols. 8vo, and often since, Books; II.-IV. Still an important work.
    
    Thomas Cartwright (the father of English Presbyterianism, d. 1603). Directory o f Church Government anciently contended for, written in 1583, published by authority of the Long Parliament in 1644.
    
    In the controversy during the Long Parliament and the Westminster Assembly, Bishop Hall and Archbishop Ussher were the most learned champions of episcopacy; while the five Smectymnians (so called from their famous tract Smectymnuus, 1641, in reply to Hall), i.e., Stephen Marshall, Edmund Calamy, Thomas Young, Matthew Newcomen, and William Spurstow, were the most prominent Presbyterians trying to "demonstrate the parity of bishops and presbyters in Scripture, and the antiquity of ruling elders."
