    I found in HISTORY OF ILLINOIS and HER PEOPLE, by Pro. Geo. W. Smith, M.A., Vol
    VI, 1927., a biography on John A. Marshall from Mason Co., IL who was born at
    Pleasent Valley, Ohio in 1846.  He was supposed to have been brought to Kankakee
    
    Co., IL. at the age of two.  It goes on to say he is a great-grandson of John
    Marshall, a Virginian and (not distantly related to the famous Chief Justice
    John Marshall.)
    
    His grandfather was Joshua Marshall, born in Pennsylvania and his grandmother
    was Sarah Hagues.
    
    His father was Joshua Marshall, Jr., and mother Drusilla Rakestraw.
    
    My questions are, how trustworthy are these biographys, and has anyone else been
    able to locate proof of where exactly this particular great-grandfather, John
    Marshall came from in Virginia? Joshua was supposedly born in Pennsylvania and
    don't know if his parents moved to Virginia.  Joshua and Sarah were married in
    Loudoun Co., Virginia 1804.
    
    This is the first time I have heard the name of Joshua Marshall, Sr.'s father,
    as John.
    
    There seems to be a lot of lines on the famous Chief Justice John Marshall, but
    the claim that Joshua's father, John is not distantly related doesn't help, if
    his line hasn't been included.
    
    Also I have found Sarah Hagues' name spelled several different ways.  In one
    account her name was Haynes.  I've heard that they were Society of Friends, but
    haven't found evidence of that.  A lot of Marshall families, but not this one.
    
    Has anyone been able to break the brick wall on this line?  Thanks, so much.

    Hello, My name is Bobby Rakestraw and was working very close with him
    and would like to know what is happened but will follow up on my
    own. He visited me at least once I I visited with him twice in FL.

    3 males accounted for, both on 1810 Census gone
    of those two, 1 father of 2 on 1820 Census, other son
    of Nancy's daughter
    
    *of the other females, one was Cynthia Rakestraw who married John
    Bitticks in Williamson Co., TN @ 1817.
    
    That male on 1810 Census possibly yours.

    Re read my message. There was another adult female with a son and
    three daughters with Nancy. Nancy only had two childred according to
    an 1822 deed; and one of the other children was a Cynthia Rakestraw
    who married John Bittick in Williamson, TN around 1817. One of those
    two males, either Nancy's son (who had two sons, James Monroe and
    Anderson Green Rakestraw) or the other unknown possibly the father of
    your John and James M. It's possible the other female moved west of
    Rockingham and Stokes Cos., NC prior to going on to TN. My James
    Monroe moved to TN about 1862 and disappears after 1872.
    Nancy appears most likely associated with John Rakestraw who died in
    Culpeper Co., VA in 1815 but no hard data.
    This year's visit was just enjoyment.
    No, I have not looked at 1930 Census.
    You might check both 1870 and 1900 census as both gave name and birth
    place of both parents.
    In Rev. War, 1776-1781, only Robert of Halifax, VA documented. In War
    of 1812 one in PA mentioned. By Civil War
    in 1865, several mentioned.

    That's why I asked Shirley for the complete data.If that James b.
    around 1827 in Ohio, who were his parents born in Bourbon Co., VA
    before 1797? This is interesting - no known Rakestraws have been
    discovered in that area during that time frame.
