Seeking to identify the ancestry of John MARSHALL (AKA John Lewis MARSHALL and John William MARSHALL), believed born Kirton-in-Lindsey, Lincs 14 Sep 1773.
Family legend has it that John's parents, William (?) MARSHALL and Maria METCALF were living in America, but, prior to John's birth, had traveled to Lincs to settle the estate of John's grandfather, possibly named Thomas MARSHALL, born @1709. [This story is one way of accounting for John's Lincolnshire birth, but he could as well have simply been native-born Lincs and came to America at an early age on his own. Also, over the years a great deal of effort has been put into proving a family link to John Marshall, friend of Washington, Secretary of State, and Chief Justice in the early 1800's in the U. S. This would be nice, but nothing I have seen to date fits that mold.]
Family legend also leads one to conclude that John's parents remained in Lincs after his birth, his father died, as there is an indication his mother remarried, and had sons. Two of these boys, again family legend, has it that in the 1820's a touring English theatre troupe visited Augusta, GA -- where John settled-- and two of the actors, named YOUNG, were known to John as his half-brothers.
John MARSHALL is believed to have arrived in America about 1791. He married Elizabeth McGill, originally of Fayetteville, Cumberland County, NC on 8 Jun 1805 in Augusta, Richmond County, GA. [No clue as to what brought him from England, the route to Augusta, nor how he met and married Elizabeth McGill.] John was the first sexton of Magnolia Cemetery in Augusta, and died a few days after resigning the position in 1833. His wife, Elizabeth (b1787) died in Augusta in 1854.
I want to find John Marshall's ancestry, including his maternal METCALF (or whoever) connection. [John and Elizabeth MARSHALL did name their youngest son John METCALF MARSHALL, so I think there is indeed a METCALF somewhere in the woodpile.] I also would like to prove, or dispel, the long-standing legend of the link to the YOUNG actors, whose visit to Augusta cannot be documented from the Augusta newspapers of the era.
