John Alexander was born in 1876 in Québec, Canada.  John Alexander's father was John Marshall and his mother is Margaret Shaw.  His paternal grandparents were John Marshall and Sarah SHEVENELL; his maternal grandparents are John Shaw and Sarah McPhail. He has two brothers and three sisters, named Malcolm Lawrence, James Irvine, Catherine, Jessie and Margaret.  He is the oldest of the six children.
