John was born about 1770.  John's father was Thomas Marshall and his mother is Peggy Wise Marshall.  His paternal grandparents were Peter Marshall and Elizabeth Ward. He had a brother and two sisters, named William Walton, Elizabeth and Mary Polly.  He was the second oldest of the four children.  He died in February 1838.
