Gilbert was born in 1822.  Gilbert's father was Solomon Marshall and his mother was Martha Patty Inglis.  His paternal grandparents were Anthony James Marshall and Rachael Morse. He had eight brothers and three sisters, named James Inglis, Edward M, Stephen, Richard, Solomon, WIlliam F, Alpheus, Thomas W, Lovicia, Hannah and Eliza.  He died at the age of 3 in 1825.
