Valentine was born on February 3rd, 1843 in Grayson Co, KY.  Valentine's father was Jacob Layman and his mother was Sarah Wilson.  His paternal grandparents were Michael Layman and Sarah Sturm; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Wilson and Winney Lee. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Francis Marion, Henry, Martha E and EMily.  He died at the age of 71 on November 20th, 1914 in Grayson Co, KY.
