James was born in 1696.  James' father was William 8th Earl Marischal Keith and his mother is Mary Drummond.  His paternal grandfather was George 7th Earl Marischal Keith and his paternal grandmother is Mary Hay; his maternal grandparents are Earl James of Perth Drummond and <Unknown>. He had a brother and two sisters, named George 9th Earl Marischal, Mary and Anne.  He died at the age of 62 in 1758.
