    Since Kathie's original posting, for which I requested the source,
    Linda Lawhon has kindly sent me the appropriate reference to
    _Adventurers of Purse and Person_ that explains why the source I
    quoted (William & Mary Quarterly, series 2, vol. 19, no. 1 (Jan 1939))
    made the mistaken statement that Verlinda Stone was nee Cotton.
    
    Mrs. P.W. Hiden wrote that Verlinda was a sister of Wm. Cotton in her
    articles on the three rectors of Hungar's parish.  Later, in her
    article on the Graves family, she said, 'In discussing Ann who m. 1
    Wm. Cotton, 2 Nathaniel Eaton, 3 Francis Doughty, the writer,
    following the statement in Md. Hist. Mag. (vol 16, p. 191), asserted
    that Capt. Stone's sife was Wm. Cotton's sister. Further research
    shows this an error, and that Verlinda Stone was sister of Ann Graves,
    in proof of which the following facts are presented.' She goes on to
    show that the will of William Stone names his brother in law Francis
    Doughty, third husband of Ann Graves.  The first husband of Ann
    Graves, William Cotton, named William Stone as brother in law.
    William Stone's will also mentions "brother Sprigg."  Katherine
    Graves, sister to Verlinda and Ann, married first William Roper and
    second Thomas Sprigg. (Genealogies of Virginia Families, from the

    Co., Inc., 1982)
    
    Citing sources IS the point of genealogy. Without them, it is
    impossible to judge the accuracy of a claim or to correct errors. Many

    The fate of the fourth Graves sibling, Katherine, is still a matter of
    some question. Undoubtedly she married Wm Roper and Thomas Sprigg.
    
    Virginia Meyer and John Frederick Dorman, eds., _Adventurers of Purse
    and Person_ (Order of First Families of Virginia, 1987), pp. 329-330:
    "Katherine^2 Graves (Thomas) married (1) William Roper, lieutenant and
    captain of militia, justice of Accawmack, 1637, and Burgess from
    Accawmack, 1637, and from Northampton, 1644 [Leonard, pp. 15, 22]. He
    died between 28 Aug 1650, when he attended court as a justice, and 30
    Dec 1650 when Mrs. Kathryne Roper, the relict of Capt. William Roper,
    deceased, was mentioned [Northampton Co. Deeds, Wills &c 3, 1645-51,
    pp. 223, 236]. She married (2) Thomas Sprigg, who deposed 14 Oct 1665
    he was aged 35 and 17 Sept 1694 he was aged 64 [Maryland Provincial
    Court liber FF, p. 91; Liber WRC #1, p. 696]. He was a justice of
    Northampton County, 1655 [Northampton Co Deeds, Wills &c 5, 1654-55,
    p. 143], and as Lieft. Thomas Sprigge signed the Northampton
    engagement to recognize the Parliamentary government of England, 26
    July 1653 [Northampton Co Deeds, Wills &c4, 1651-54, p. 189]. He
    shortly afterward moved to Maryland where he was justice of Calvert
    County, 1658-74, and sheriff, 1664-65, and later resided in Prince
    George's County, where he left will 9 May 1704-9 Dec 1704 [Maryland
    Proprietary Wills 3, pp. 443-44]. Katherine^2 died before 1 Sept 1668
    when he married (2) Eleanor Nuttall [_The Archives of Maryland_, V
    (Baltimore, 1887), p. 34]."
    "Issue: (by 1) [ROPER] 26. William^3, given a calf in the will of his
    Godfather William Burdett, 22 July 1643 [Northampton Co Orders, Deeds,
    Wills &c 2, 1640-45, p. 159]; 27. Verlinda^3, to whom her mother, on
    the eve of her (2) marriage, made a deed of gift, 1 March 1650/1
    [Northampton Co Deeds, Wills &c 4, 1651-54, p. 14]; (by 2) [SPRIGG]
    28. Sarah^3; 29. Thomas^3."
    
    Did she also have a daughter Katherine? Or were there two Katherine
    Spriggs in 17th-c VA? If so, who is the woman mentioned in the will of
    Samuel Griffin of Northumberland Co, gentleman, 1703: "to Katherine,
    daughter of my sister Katherine Sprigg, deceased, 40 shillings."
    Samuel's wife was Sarah ---, and it is possible that Katherine Sprigg
    was her sister rather than Samuel's, given the kinship terminology of
    the day.
