  • Joseph GOLDEN Jr (Sr) wrote a will on 29 May 1776, recorde d in.(4) Joseph's will was probated on 2 Sep 1777.(5) He li ved in Monmouth Co, NJ, prior to settling in Hopewell. On 3 0 Dec 1734, he purchased 200 acres of land in Hopewell, Mer cer, NJ, from Thomas HOUGHTON. He purchased the balance o f the HOUGHTON tract on 19 Jul 1750. While his father was a live he was referred to as Joseph, Junior. After his son be came an adult, he was sometime referred to as Joseph, Senio r.
    
    Joseph purchased his first tract at Hopewell of Thomas Houg hton (father of Col. Joab), on Dec 30, 1734, and it is supp osed settled on it the following spring, as we find that h e gave a bond to Mr. Houghton in 1735, for one hundred poun ds current money of New Jersey, at "eight shillings per oun ce," conditioned for the payment of fifty pounds of like mo ney, on, or before the twenty-fifth day of December, 1737 . Mr. Houghton gave Mr. Golden a receipt for payment in ful l on this bond, which I will copy in full here retaining th e original capitalization and spelling: "March ye 22the Da y 1744." "Received of Joseph Golden the sume of fifty pound s Lawfull money, with Lawfull interest of the provence of w est New Jersey, which was Dow upon a bond Bareing Datse on e thousand Seven Hundred thirty five, payable the twenty fi fth day of December, in the yeare of our Lord one thousan d Seven Hundred and thirty seven. Given under my Hand and S eal this twenty Second Day of March, 1744. "THOMAS HOUGHTON ." "Witness present, Benjamin Anderson, Wm. Jones." [From ; Pioneers of Old Hopewell] ------------------------------- ------------------------------------------- --------------- ------------------- The last will and testament of Joseph G olden [Jr] was dated May 29, 1776, and proved before Jare d Sexton, surrogate, September 2, 1777. Joseph left a legac y to his widow, but the will does not give her name. The fo llowing is a copy of its other provisions: "I give to Mar y Golden, eldest daughter of my son Joseph Golden, Deceased : 30 acres of land on which she and her mother now liveth , she remaining single and unmarried. If she marries, the n I give the 30 acres to Kesiah Golden. If they both remai n single, they are to have it jointly, their mother havin g her living there as long as she remains a widow. If the y both marry, or depart this life, then I give the land t o their younger brother Jacob Golden, and to his heirs an d assigns forever, he paying his elder brother Joseph thirt y pounds at the age of twenty five. "And concerning the lit tle house, and four acres of land by the brook bank, I giv e it to all my children, to the use and benefit of mining , all of them to share equally in the expense and profits , my wife to share equally with them in the profit, withou t any expense to her. "The remaining part of the plantatio n I give to my son Elias, he paying legatee to his sisters , and concerning the plantation I bought of Thomas Houghto n and on which I now live, I give and bequeath as follows:
    
    "To my son Jacob Golden, one hundred acres on which he no w liveth, he paying legatee to his sisters, his line beginn ing at the stone between Moses Hart and Peter Mattison. " I give to my son William Golden that westerly part divide d by a line as far as the run whereon he now liveth, he pay ing legatee to his sisters. "I give to my son Abraham Golde n the easterly part whereon he now liveth, he paying legate e to his sisters.
    
    "I order that the land north of the run be divided equall y between my sons, Jacob, Elias, William and Abraham, the y paying to their sisters legatee. "As to the legacies pai d to my daughters, my will is that they have one hundred po unds each of them, namely, Anne, Elizabeth and Mary, to b e paid to them by their brothers, namely: Jacob Golden, 8 0 pounds, William Golden, 80 pounds, Abraham Golden, 80 pou nds, and Elias Golden, 65 pounds.
    
    "I hereby appoint Jacob, Elias, William and Abraham Golden , executors of this my last will and testament. "Signed, "J OSEPH GOLDEN." "Nehemiah Sexton,| "Jared Sexton,|Witnesses. " "David Larison,| ---------------------------------------- ---------------------------------- ------ Dr. Benjamin Va n Kirk of Hopewell attended Mr. Golden in his last sicknes s and as his last entry in Mr. Golden's account is dated Au gust 1, 1777, his death doubtless occurred at that time.
